Following Phoebe

About

About Laura Haines

I am a Christian, a wife, a daughter, and I work in Christian ministry to International Students at St Helen's Bishopsgate, London.

I studied Psychology as an undergraduate and have also completed a Grad. Dip. in Counselling alongside a ministry apprenticeship before beginning full time ministry work in 2016.

My husband and I are both part of St Helen's Bishopsgate Church. We are both passionate about sharing the gospel, and seeing people coming to know Christ.

I grew up in a Christian home, my dad became the pastor of a church, we moved to Tasmania, and I became a pastor’s kid, when I was 10 years old. I came to know Jesus as my Lord and Saviour when I was 12 years old and have been learning what that means more and more ever since.

The things written on this blog are my thoughts and reflections on the world, culture, Christianity, Christian ministry, and other things which are important to me. These are my views, and not the views of St Helen's Bishopsgate as a church. Sometimes I’ll probably get things wrong, or say things clumsily, I’m still human, and definitely flawed. But I hope that what I write will be helpful some of the time! I would love to hear comments and feedback on the things I do write, but please, be kind!

About Following Phoebe

It might seem like a cryptic name for a blog, but I wanted the name to reflect what this blog was going to be about so let me explain.

Phoebe was a woman in the early church whom the apostle Paul mentions in Romans 16:1 as a servant (possibly a deaconess) of the church and whom he entrusts with the task of taking that very letter to the church in Rome.

I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well. – Romans 16:1-2

Although I ultimately follow Christ, I thought that ‘Following Phoebe’ would be an apt name for a blog written by a woman working in ministry as I seek to serve and help people in a way that I hope Phoebe herself would be proud of!
